Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is the standard way of transferring data securely over the Internet. It encrypts data, so that sensitive information cannot be intercepted by a third party. It is most often used to allow online payment transactions to be placed securely, where data like credit card information needs to be protected. For SSL to work properly, your website is required to have a digital certificate, issued by an authorized SSL certificate provider like GeoTrust.

Note: You can use SSL without an SSL certificate; however, visitors may receive a warning message that there is not a "trusted" certificate for the website.
